Elizabeth Lake Lodge: A Dream Built Beside Nature
For George and Rachel, owning a hotel was never simply about rooms and reservations. It was about creating a place where people could slow down, reconnect, and experience the beauty of Cranbrook.
When they purchased the former Ponderosa Motel in 2004, they saw something others didn’t. Bordering the 250-acre Elizabeth Lake Bird Sanctuary, the property offered an incredible setting and endless potential. They envisioned a destination unlike anything else in the region, where nature, hospitality, and community would come together in one remarkable place.
That vision became Elizabeth Lake Lodge.
Long before the first major renovations were completed, George and Rachel painted a mural showing what they hoped the property would one day become. It was an ambitious dream, but from the very beginning Cranbrook embraced it. Through each phase of development, the community supported their efforts and shared in the excitement of watching the transformation unfold.
From the grand opening of Phase 1 in 2007, to entrance and office improvements in 2009, the construction of Phase 2 between 2010 and 2011, and the completion of Phase 3 in 2016, Elizabeth Lake Lodge steadily evolved into the destination guests experience today.
And what guests experience is often the same thing.
They exhale.
The carefully designed landscaping, the sounds of nature, the warmth of the welcome, and the comfort of a thoughtfully appointed room create an immediate sense of calm. It is a place to recharge after a busy week, to find inspiration in the surrounding landscape, and to reconnect with the outdoors.
The lodge has become a reflection of the lifestyle that draws so many people to Cranbrook. Just minutes from downtown, guests can explore birdwatching trails, walk alongside Elizabeth Lake, or ride the area’s growing network of mountain bike trails. George and Rachel are avid supporters of the local trail community and enjoy the abundance of fast, flowing singletrack that has helped establish Cranbrook as a premier outdoor recreation destination.
One of the property’s most unique attractions is Canada’s Most Difficult Mini-Putt. More than 35 years ago, local entrepreneur Wayne Wills invested $80,000 to create the original course. Since taking ownership of Elizabeth Lake Lodge, George and Rachel have added new challenges over the years, eventually growing it into a par-70 course known for testing even the most experienced mini-golf enthusiasts.
More than two decades after purchasing the property, George and Rachel’s vision continues to thrive. Their story is one of persistence, community support, and believing in the potential of a place.
At Elizabeth Lake Lodge, guests discover more than a hotel. They discover a place where nature inspires, hospitality matters, and every stay feels like a chance to breathe a little deeper.
